November 1995 and Funkademia the club night launched on a cold and blustery Sunday night at the Boardwalk nightclub, Manchester. In an era where Madchester was at it’s peak and house music was dominating the City’s club scene – a night based round soul-funk-disco-hip hop music went against the flow and was something of a gamble.
The opening night proved a remarkable success and a new club night was formed. Word got round and by the time the next Funkademia event took place on Boxing night 1995, queues were tailing round the block of the Boardwalk before the doors were opened.
Remarkably 20 years later and the night is now Manchester’s longest running club night after having successful spells at the Attic, Subspace, Zumeba and One Central Street. Over half a million clubbers have got down on the funkademia dancefloor and the night is still going strong having just enjoyed its busiest ever year at Mint Lounge
On Saturday 28th November we celebrate with David Dunne on the decks. Tickets available from Skiddle
