Funkademia Comes Of Age

Funkademia 18th birthday

After 18 years under a groove Funkademia comes of age.

In November 1995 promoter Dave Payne launched his fledging night on a cold & blustery Sunday night in the Boardwalk nightclub, Manchester. In an era where Madchester was at its peak and house music dominating the City’s club scene a night based round soul-funk-disco music was something of a gamble. The opening night proved a great success a new clubnight was formed and by the time the next Funkademia event took place on Boxing night 1995 queues were tailing round the block of the Boardwalk before the doors were opened.

Remarkably 18 years later Funkademia is Manchester’s longest running clubnight and is still going strong at the Mint Lounge nightclub after having equally successful spells at the Attic, Subspace,Zumeba and One Central Street. To celebrate Funkademia’s 18th birthday on the 23rd November the club is throwing open its guest list to both ends of the clubbing spectrum. Anyone with a membership or ticket stub from the original nights at the Boardwalk and babes in arms from that year who are celebrating their 18th birthdays can come and join our party for free.

We have also uncovered an old dusty video from the very first Boardwalk night which we’ll be airing at the Mint Lounge on the 24th so those original groovers can come along & see how well their moves and hair lines have progressed over the last 18 years.

As per that very first night the original DJ Payney will be taking to the decks alongside with David Dunne who was the front man at Manchester leading radio station in 1995 Kiss 102. The Good for the Soul boys and the rest of the Funkademia Dj stable will be also dropping in to play their favourite tracks of the last 18 years. In the back room our much loved sister night Northern Funk will also be making an appearance with Myk Nolan taking care of business.
